LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Genesis Photonics began flip-chip LED shipments to China-, South Korea- and Japan-based vendors in the fourth quarter of 2013 and aims to increase the revenue proportion from 15% for the first half of 2014 to 20-25% for the whole year, according to company chairman David Chung.

Genesis currently has a monthly production capacity of 3-4 million flip-chip LEDs and focuses on outdoor lighting, direct-type TV backlighting and smartphone flashes, Chung said. It will take 3-4 years for flip-chip LEDs to become mature, Chung indicated. Genesis' flip-chip LEDs are used in LED street lamps in China.

Genesis currently has 72 MOCVD sets for a monthly production capacity of 200,000 2-inch-equivalent epitaxial wafers, and plans to transition more than 50% of capacity to 4-inch wafers.

In terms of applications, Genesis has 50% of consolidated revenues coming from lighting, 25% from TV backlighting and 25% from handset backlighting and camera flashes. While the Taiwan, South Korea and Japan markets together account for over 50% of consolidated revenues currently, Genesis expects revenue proportion from China to decrease in the future.
